Nobody Asks AI for "Best Car Near Me"
People don't wake up and decide they need a car. They find out they're having twins. They hit 100,000 miles and hear a weird noise. They get a job offer in a city with actual winters. The car decision comes from the life moment. And right now, AI is in those conversations and you're probably not.
The moments that matter
It's 10pm. A couple just left the doctor's office that afternoon. Twins. They're sitting on the couch, overwhelmed, and one of them opens ChatGPT: "We just found out we're having twins and we have a two-door Civic. What cars actually fit two infant car seats and still have room for a stroller and groceries?"
AI answers. With specific makes. Specific models. Specific reasons why.
A 62-year-old is three years from retirement. He's been driving the same truck for 12 years. He asks Perplexity: "I'm retiring soon and want something comfortable for road trips. I've always driven trucks but maybe it's time for something different. What should I be looking at?"
AI answers. With specific makes. Specific models. Specific reasons why.
A woman is staring at her dashboard. 100,247 miles. The check engine light flickered last week. She asks Claude: "My Honda has 100k miles on it and I'm starting to worry. Is it worth putting more money into repairs or should I just start looking for something new? What holds its value best if I want to keep it for another 10 years?"
AI answers. With specific makes. Specific models. Specific reasons why.
A recent college grad just got her first real job. Minneapolis. She's from Georgia and has never driven in snow. "I just moved to Minnesota and I've never dealt with winter driving. What's a reliable car for a first-time buyer that can handle snow? I don't have a huge budget."
AI answers. With specific makes. Specific models. Specific reasons why.
Nobody searches "best car near me"
This is what the automotive industry keeps getting wrong.
All your digital marketing is built around keywords. "Toyota dealer Dallas." "Best SUV 2026." "New car specials this month."
But that's not how people actually think about buying a car. They think about their life. The twins. The retirement. The 100,000 miles. The Minnesota winter. The car is the solution. The life moment is the trigger.
And when people talk to AI, they talk about their lives. They describe their situations. They explain their circumstances. They ask for help figuring out what to do.
AI isn't giving them a list of ten blue links to click through. AI is giving them an answer. "Based on your situation, here's what I'd recommend. And here's why."
"People don't search for cars. They search for solutions to life moments. AI understands this. Does your marketing?"
Why this matters for brands
If you're Honda or Toyota or Ford, you need to be the answer when someone describes a life moment that your vehicles solve.
When someone says they're having twins, does AI mention the Odyssey? When someone says they're moving somewhere with harsh winters, does AI mention Subaru? When someone says they want a reliable car they can keep for 10 years, does AI mention Toyota?
These associations aren't random. They're built on decades of reputation, reviews, content, and real-world performance. But they're also not automatic. AI is learning what to recommend based on signals across the entire internet. If your brand isn't showing up in the contexts that matter, you're losing deals to competitors who are.
And here's the thing: these are high-intent moments. Someone asking AI about cars for twins isn't casually browsing. They're buying a car in the next few months. Someone asking about reliable vehicles at 100k miles is making a decision right now. The funnel from "AI recommendation" to "dealer visit" is shorter than almost any other channel.

If you're a dealership, the same logic applies, but local.
When someone in your city asks AI for a recommendation, does your dealership come up? When they ask "where's the best place to buy a used Subaru in Denver," are you in that answer? When they ask "which Toyota dealers in Phoenix have good service departments," do you show up?
Most dealers are spending thousands on Google Ads and hoping the algorithms deliver. But there's a whole new channel opening up where people are asking for recommendations by name, and AI is giving them answers. If you're not in those answers, you're invisible to a growing segment of car buyers.
The buyers using AI tend to be more informed. They've done their research. They know what they want. They're not walking in to browse. They're walking in ready to buy. That's the kind of lead every dealer wants, and AI is generating them every day.
The life moments that drive car purchases
Here are the conversations happening right now that you're probably not tracking:
"We're having a baby and need something safer than what we have." First child. First minivan or SUV consideration. Brand preferences form here and can last decades.
"My kid just got her license and I need something reliable and safe for a new driver." This is a parent asking for peace of mind. They want safety ratings, reliability data, and reassurance.
"I'm driving 50 miles each way for my new job. What's the most fuel-efficient option that isn't miserable to sit in?" Commuter math. They're calculating total cost of ownership whether they know it or not.
"We just moved somewhere with actual weather and I've never driven in snow." Climate migration. They need AWD recommendations and winter driving confidence.
"I'm retiring and want to drive cross-country. Comfort matters more than it used to." Lifestyle transition. They're optimizing for different things than they did at 35.
"My car has 150k miles and the repairs are starting to add up. When does it make sense to just buy new?" The replacement calculation. They want math and options.
"I got divorced and need my own car for the first time in 15 years. Where do I even start?" Starting over. They need guidance, not a sales pitch.
Every single one of these is happening in AI conversations right now. Every single one ends with AI recommending specific brands, specific models, sometimes specific dealers.
"A car purchase is never just about the car. It's about the twins. The retirement. The divorce. The first job. The 100,000 miles. AI gets this. Your marketing should too."
The compounding problem
Here's what makes this urgent: AI recommendations compound.
When someone asks about safe cars for new drivers and AI recommends Honda, that association gets reinforced. The next time someone asks a similar question, Honda is even more likely to come up. The pattern builds on itself.
The brands that show up early in these conversations build authority that becomes harder and harder for competitors to displace. The dealers that get recommended become the default recommendation. First mover advantage is real here.
If you wait until "AI search is big enough to matter," you'll be playing catch-up against competitors who've been building these associations for years.
What to do about it
Start by finding out where you stand.
Ask ChatGPT: "I'm having twins and need a bigger car. What should I look at?" See if your brand is in the answer.
Ask Perplexity: "What's the best Toyota dealer in [your city]?" See if your dealership comes up.
Ask Claude: "I'm retiring and want something comfortable for road trips. What do you recommend?" See where you rank.
Then ask about your competitors. See what AI says about them. See which life moments they're showing up in that you're not.
That's the baseline. That's where you start.
From there, it's about understanding why AI recommends what it recommends, and making sure your brand is positioned to show up in the moments that matter. That's what we built Aethon AI to help with.
We track what AI says about your brand and your competitors across different life moments. We show you where you're winning, where you're losing, and what to do about it. For OEMs and for dealers.
