What is AI Search?

AI search is what happens when the answer replaces the results page: assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity synthesize a recommendation instead of listing links.

A verdict, not a list

Traditional search returns options you evaluate. AI search returns a decision, basically made: one synthesized answer, a couple of named brands, sources folded in. The user never sees positions two through ten.

Conversational, not keyword-native

Nobody types “best doctor near me” at an assistant. They say “I’ve been tired lately and my knee hurts when I run.” The model hears the situation, infers the need, and recommends, often before any product question is asked. That inference step is where brands win or lose.

Where the answers come from

Each assistant blends model knowledge with live retrieval: what it absorbed in training, plus what it fetches at answer time. Both are shapeable. Structured data, citation-grade content, and consistent third-party corroboration decide who gets named.

Why it matters now

A growing share of buying decisions complete inside these conversations without a single traditional search. The brands engineering their presence now are setting defaults the models will carry for years.
