What goes into a visibility score
Serious scores combine three ingredients. Mention rate: the percentage of relevant prompts where your brand appears at all. Position: whether you are the first recommendation or a trailing mention. Sentiment: whether the framing sells you or damns you with faint praise.
Scores that only count mentions are easy to inflate and easy to misread. A brand mentioned everywhere as the overpriced option scores high on presence and is losing every comparison.
Readiness scores versus outcome scores
There are two different things people call an AI visibility score, and confusing them wastes money. Outcome scores measure what assistants actually say today, built by running real prompts through ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity. Readiness scores, like our free GEO Grader, measure whether your site and citation footprint have the properties that earn mentions.
You need both. The outcome score tells you where you stand. The readiness score tells you what to fix. Fixing readiness is the only lever that moves outcomes.
What counts as a good score
For most categories, being named in more than half of relevant buying-moment prompts puts you in the top tier, and being the first recommendation in a quarter of them usually means you dominate the category narrative. New entrants commonly start below ten percent mention rate, which is not a verdict. It is a baseline.
Benchmarks vary by competitive density. A regional law practice can plausibly reach seventy percent mention rate for local moments. A SaaS product in a crowded category fights for every point.
Why your score moves when you did nothing
Scores wobble because assistants retrain, re-crawl and sample. A five-point weekly swing is noise. A sustained slide over a month means something changed: a competitor earned citations, a listicle updated without you, or a source you relied on went stale.
This is why score trends beat snapshots, and why any score you track should come with the receipts: which prompts, which assistants, which answers.
Raising your score in the right order
Work the layers in order of leverage. Fix entity consistency first because it is cheap and fast. Then restructure your key pages to answer questions directly with parseable formatting. Then close the citation gap on the third-party sources assistants keep citing for your rivals. Measure monthly and expect first movement within a quarter.
