However you got here, you are now wondering whether you need AI visibility software. Good instinct. But before you put anything on a credit card, it helps to know what this category actually is, what separates a real tool from a dashboard of vanity metrics, and whether you even need it yet.
Here is how to think about it.
First, why you're even thinking about this
Your buyers stopped searching and started asking. Instead of typing "best [your category]" into Google, they describe their situation to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Perplexity and ask for a recommendation. And the AI answers. With specific names. With reasons.
If your brand is in that answer, you get a warm introduction from the most trusted research assistant your buyer has ever used. If you are not, you never knew the conversation happened.
AI visibility software exists because that conversation is invisible to you by default. You cannot see it in Google Analytics. It does not show up in your rank tracker. It is happening, constantly, and the only way to know what it says about you is to look.
"You can't manage a conversation you can't see. AI visibility software is how you finally see it."
What AI visibility software actually does
Strip away the category jargon and a real tool does four things:
It monitors what AI says about you and your competitors across the models your buyers actually use. It tracks how that changes over time, because AI re-reads its sources continuously. It surfaces the gaps, the moments where a competitor gets recommended and you do not. And it tells you what to do about it, in language a marketer can act on this week.
Notice what is not on that list: keyword rankings. AI does not rank pages, it makes recommendations. So a tool that just ports your old SEO dashboard into a new logo is solving the wrong problem.
The questions to ask before you buy
Does it track conversations, or just keyword prompts? Generic prompt lists like "best CRM 2026" never surface how real people talk. Your buyers describe a life moment, not a keyword. The tool should track the messy, human questions your market actually asks.
Does it cover the models my buyers use? ChatGPT is not the whole story. Buyers use Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity too, and those models often disagree about who to recommend. One-model coverage is a blind spot.
Does it measure recommendation quality, not just mention counts? Getting mentioned is not the goal. Getting recommended, with positive sentiment, in the right context, is. "Brand X is an option, but customers complain about support" is a mention and a problem. The tool should know the difference and so should you, which means understanding how AI decides who to recommend.
Does it tell me what to do, or just show me a number? A dashboard that says your visibility score is 42 is useless if it cannot tell you why, or what to change. The action layer is the entire point.
Can a marketer actually use it? If you need a data scientist to read it, your team will not use it. The best tool in this category is the one your marketing team opens on a Monday and acts on by Friday.
Does it show my competitors? You cannot understand your position without the leaderboard. If the tool only looks at you, you are missing half the picture.
The red flags
"Optimize your way to the top." You cannot game AI the way people gamed Google. Any vendor promising a secret formula is selling snake oil, and it helps to know which GEO claims are myths before you sit through the pitch.
Vanity metrics. Mention counts and "share of voice" numbers with no context look impressive and mean very little.
The SEO playbook in a new outfit. Keyword density, backlinks, schema tricks. Helpful for Google, mostly irrelevant to how AI decides who to trust.
No path to action. If the demo is all charts and no "here is what to fix first," you are buying a report, not a solution.
Do you actually need it right now?
Honest answer: not everyone does, yet.
If you are a small local business in a category nobody asks AI about, you can probably start with the free ten-minute check below and revisit in a few months.
But if you are in a considered-purchase category, B2B software, healthcare, legal, financial services, automotive, anything where buyers research before they commit, the conversation is already happening and it already favors someone.
And here is the part that makes it time-sensitive: AI visibility compounds. The authority you build now gets baked into how AI describes you later. The brands that show up early become the default recommendation, and that lead is hard to take back.
"The question isn't whether AI is talking about your category. It's whether it's talking about you, and whether you'd know if it stopped."
How to start without spending a dime
Before you buy anything, do this: open ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini, and ask the questions your customers actually ask. See if you come up. See who does. Write down the names and the reasons.
That is your baseline, and it costs you ten minutes.
What software adds is everything you cannot do by hand: running those checks continuously, across every model, for every moment that matters, tracking competitors, catching changes, and turning all of it into a prioritized list of what to fix. The manual check tells you where you stand today. The software tells you where you stand every day, and what to do about it.
Why we built Aethon for exactly this
We looked at every tool in this category and kept finding the same two problems: they were built by engineers for engineers, and they treated AI like Google with a different logo. So we built the opposite.
Aethon tracks the life moments your buyers bring to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity, measures whether you are recommended and not just mentioned, shows you who is winning instead of you, and hands your team a plain-language plan. Built from the marketing perspective out, not the data layer up.
We do not pretend a dashboard fixes your reputation. What we do is show you exactly what AI says about you, and what it is costing you to be invisible.
Questions buyers ask before they choose
Software that monitors what AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity say and recommend about your brand and your competitors, tracks how it changes, and shows you what to improve. Think of it as what rank trackers were to Google, except it measures recommendations and sentiment, not keyword positions.
SEO tools track where your pages rank for keywords. AI visibility software tracks whether AI recommends you in conversations, and why. Different system, different signals, different metric. You can rank number one on Google and still be invisible in ChatGPT.
Possibly more than you think. Google ranking does not predict AI visibility, because the signals are different. Plenty of brands that dominate search are absent from AI recommendations, while smaller competitors with stronger reputations show up instead.
Because AI models re-read their sources continuously, targeted fixes often show measurable movement within 4 to 8 weeks, faster than traditional SEO cycles. Building durable authority takes longer, but the monitoring shows you movement early.
