The classic layer: local dominance still fills the schedule
Google Business Profile depth, categories, services, photos, hours, and reviews at volume with recent recency, remain the heaviest levers in dental marketing. Service pages per treatment, implants, aligners, emergency visits, each answering cost, process and recovery questions plainly. Location pages per office. And retention marketing, recall emails and membership plans, because the cheapest new patient is the one who returns. None of this is optional, and most competing practices still do it half-heartedly, which is the opportunity.
The 2026 layer: the toothache conversation
Patients now tell assistants things like my crown cracked and I leave for a trip Friday, or how much do implants actually cost and who is good near me. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity answer with triage and, increasingly, named practices, drawn from review platforms, health directories and practice sites that answer plainly. The practice that appears in those answers gets the patient before the map pack loads, the mechanics are in how AI chooses dentists.
For dentists this layer is very winnable: most dental moments in most cities have no consistently recommended practice yet, and accuracy plus review strength, which good practices already have, is most of what assistants reward.
The 90-day plan for a practice
Days 1 to 30: fix every profile assistants and maps read, hours, services, insurance, photos, and systematize review requests at checkout. Days 31 to 60: publish one plain-language page per common patient situation, emergency, implants cost, aligner comparison, kids first visit, and baseline the AI layer with a free AI visibility audit of your city’s dental moments. Days 61 to 90: correct the cited sources behind lost answers, wire call and booking tracking by source, and re-test monthly. Practices that run both layers stop paying rising ad prices for patients their answers could have earned, the ads math is in Google Ads for small business.
