What are life moments? The unit of AI-era marketing

A life moment is a change in someone’s circumstances that creates commercial needs before any search happens: a first baby, a job loss, an engagement, a diagnosis, a move, a company hitting a compliance wall. People used to carry those moments to friends and family first. Now they carry them to AI assistants, and the assistant translates the moment into needs and the needs into recommended brands. That translation is the new front of the funnel, and the moment is its basic unit.

From keywords to moments

Search marketing built its whole system on the keyword: a typed phrase that signals formed intent. By the time someone types “best CRM for small business,” they already know they want a CRM. The keyword is the end of a story, not the beginning.

The beginning is the moment. “We just hired our first salesperson and things are slipping through the cracks” is not a keyword anyone bids on, but it is exactly what a founder says to ChatGPT at 11 p.m. The assistant hears the moment, infers the need, and often names the shortlist in its reply. Whoever is in that reply entered the funnel before the funnel officially started. This is why tracking “best X” prompts measures the wrong thing.

What counts as a moment, and what does not

A useful life moment has three properties. It is a change: something is different today than last month. It creates needs: predictable products, services or decisions follow from it. And it is confided: people describe it in natural language to assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity, usually without any brand or category vocabulary.

“I just turned 50” is a moment: catch-up retirement contributions, insurance reviews and health screenings follow from it. “Best retirement calculator” is not a moment: it is a query that a moment produced earlier. Business moments work identically: a lost enterprise deal over SOC 2, a first international hire, an office lease ending. At Aethon we have mapped 2,400+ of these moments across 20 industries, more than 200 per industry, into a library we test against the four major assistants.

Why moments are becoming the unit of marketing

Assistants act on moments whether or not brands do. Every day, AI infers needs from what people confide and recommends specific companies in response. Brands that only manage keywords never see those conversations, and there is no search console for the ones they were left out of. Mapping the moments, measuring who gets recommended at each one, and fixing the losses is the discipline we call Contextual AI Presence Mapping©. The evidence for how early these conversations start is in People Tell AI First, and you can explore real examples with the interactive Moment Mapper inside the CAPM guide. Frequently asked questions

What is a life moment in marketing terms?

A change in personal or business circumstances that creates predictable needs before any search happens, and that people describe to AI assistants in natural language: a first baby, a layoff, a move, a compliance requirement.

How is a life moment different from a keyword?

A keyword expresses intent that already formed; a moment is where the intent comes from. Assistants translate moments into needs and recommendations before a keyword style question is ever asked.

Are business events life moments too?

Yes. A lost deal over SOC 2, a first sales hire or an expiring lease behave exactly like personal moments: they are confided to assistants, needs are inferred, and vendors get recommended.

How many life moments matter for a typical industry?

Aethon’s moment library maps more than 200 per industry across 20 industries. A single brand usually finds that a few dozen moments drive most of its winnable recommendations.

How do I find the life moments that matter for my brand?

Start from customer stories rather than keyword tools: what changed in their lives right before they came to you? A free AI visibility audit maps your category’s key moments and shows which brands the four major assistants recommend at each.
